Bloomfield Public Schools’ third and seventh grade students achieved double-digit increases in the recently released Smarter Balanced Assessment, which test grades 3-8 in English and Math.

Double-digit increases in both Reading/Writing and Math were also seen recently with Bloomfield’s SAT scores for high school juniors.

“These significant increases validate that we are moving in the right direction in improving student performance, closing the academic achievement gap and preparing our students for college and meaningful careers,’’ said Superintendent  Dr. James Thompson Jr. “We are focused now on having these types of impressive results across our entire school district. We still have much work to do.”

Thompson noted that third grade is a pivotal year in a child’s early literacy development. Outcomes there can be a predictor of advanced literacy skills, academic success and graduation.

Bloomfield third graders increased 23 percentage points in English – from 30% in 2017 to 53%. Third grade Math improved 12 percentage points – from 31% to 43%.

Fifth-graders increased in Math from 14% to 25%; and in English, from 36% to 40%.

Bloomfield’s 7th grade students improved 13 percentage points in English – from 34% to 47%; and 10 percentage points in Math – from 18% to 28%.

An area of intensified focus, Thompson said, will be the 6th grade, which reflected double-digit decreases in both English and Math. A comprehensive analysis of the data will be conducted to identify and remedy the causes of the outcomes there.

“Our goal is to produce consistent academic growth district-wide,” Thompson said.

Overall the district average in Math increased from 27% to 29%; and dropped a point in English – from 42% to 41%.
