DISTRICT HIGHLIGHTS

 

Academics

 

  • Bloomfield Public Schools was one of a small number of Connecticut districts that delivered double-digit increases in Reading and Math on the 2018 SATs
  • Double-digit increases also reflected on Smarter Balance Assessments for third and seventh grade students in English and Math; and double-digit increases for fifth grade students in Math.
  • The district is performing slightly above the state average, according to a 2018 state accountability report, which measured such things as graduation rates, college-and-career readiness and access to the arts.
  • A novel, free after-school program is ongoing for those in grades 2 to 8. There is also an extended-year free summer-enrichment program
  • A STEAM curriculum (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Math) is embedded in our extended-day and after-school curriculum
  • Dr. James Thompson was named 2018 CT Superintendent of the Year by the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents
  • Unique parent and family-engagement programs are featured throughout the district

 

 

Athletics

 

  • Three Bloomfield High state championship teams in 2018-19 – football, girls and boys track & field.
  • Terry Miller – a Bloomfield High School junior, and girls track standout -- is a co-recipient of the 2019 Bob Casey Courage Award by the Connecticut Sports Writers Alliance. Miller and co-recipient Andraya Yearwood, of Cromwell High, are the athletes honored with the award.
  • BHS Girls’Track & Field Coach Anne Burrows was selected 2019 Outstanding Coach of the Year in Girls Track & Field by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association. Burrows’ teams have won multiple state outdoor and indoor track championships over the years.

 

The Arts

 

  • A generational boom in real estate development is underway in town, due in part – according to the Hartford Business Journal – renewed confidence in our Bloomfield Public Schools.
  • Bloomfield Public Schools was honored with a Best Communities for Music Education designation from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. Now in its 20th year, the award is given to districts across the country that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.
  • The district’s music program performed Disney’s “High School Musical” in March; and Kings & Queens of Soul at The Bushnell in April.
