  • BHS Ranked in the Top 10% of CT high schools -- #36 -- in 2017 U.S. News & World Report’s “Best High Schools in CT”.

  • District enrollment up 4% in 2016, the highest increase in a decade.

  • High school graduation rates are up, including 100% for Global Experience Magnet School. The Bloomfield High School graduation rate increased from 74% in 2011 to 91% in 2016.

  • Grades 3-8 increased six percentage points in Math and Literacy on the 2016 state Smarter Balanced Assessments.

  • The number of students passing Advanced Placement courses nearly doubled - from 29% in 2012 to 58% in 2016.

  • In July 2017, Bloomfield Public Schools will be removed from the state’s Alliance District list - 30 school districts identified by the State Department of Education in 2011 as needing additional state resources for intervention.


  • BHS Girls track team won 2017 Indoor Class “S” &  State Open Indoor Track title

  • BHS Boys track team won Class “M” title - 2017.

  • BHS Football team won the Class “S” state championship - 2015.

  • BHS Boys basketball team was runner-up Class “M’ State championship 2017


  • The BHS Performing Arts Department won six awards at the national Virginia Beach "Music in the Parks" Festival.

  • District Performing Arts department hosted annual District Arts Festival concert at The Bushnell.

  • Two of Bloomfield students were among Connecticut high school seniors honored by the Connecticut Association of Schools for outstanding ability in the performing or visual arts.


  • Lead CT, a statewide education consortium that promotes best practices in education, identified Bloomfield Public Schools in 2016 as a model in “coherence and capacity”.

  • Governor Malloy and Education Commissioner Wentzell praised district in October 2016 for its commitment to minority teacher recruitment/retention.

  • Governor Dannel Malloy appointed Bloomfield Board of Education chairman Donald F. Harris, Jr. to the State Board of Education in February 2017.

  • The Hartford Business Journal’s November 2016 feature story on Bloomfield’s real estate boom credits the success of Bloomfield Public Schools as a key contributor to the renewed confidence among developers.

  • Bloomfield’s Director of Literacy, Dr. Beryl Irene Bailey authored an insightful article in the January 2017 edition of Literacy Today, about how to implement close reading strategies to enhance Reading and Math.


  • Hartford Foundation for Public Giving awarded Bloomfield Public Schools $400,000 for Extended Learning Initiative.

  • AT&T bestowed a $10,000 grant to help local high school students prepare for the SAT.

  • McDonald’s of Bloomfield made a charitable donation to the Bloomfield High School Athletic Department in November 2016.

  • Carmen Arace Middle School is partnering with UConn’s School of Engineering to engage students in activities in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) related fields.

  • In partnership with Habitat for Humanity - Bloomfield Public Schools raised the bar by committing to sponsor a Habitat Home being built on East Morningside Street named “The House That Students Built”.

  • Bloomfield High School partners with the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) to create the Young Women’s Leadership Group. This is a mentoring program for female students to guide them in college planning, career exploration, community service, social justice projects and team building. This program was made possible through a generous donation made by Comcast.


  • The New England Association of School and Colleges (NEASC) recently informed the District that Bloomfield High School successfully completed the accreditation visitation. As a result, Bloomfield High School was awarded “continued accreditation.”

  • Magnet Schools of America, the national organization for Magnet and Theme-Based Schools, recently honored Global Experience Magnet School (GEMS) with two awards, Magnet School of Excellence Award and Regional 1 Magnet Teacher of-the-Year Award.

  • The Board of Education was recognized by the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE) for Excellence in Educational Communications in 2016 and for Excellence in Board of Education leadership 2016.

  • Superintendent of Schools James Thompson Jr. named 2016 Man of the Year by CT African American Affairs Commission for his educational leadership.

  • On March 3, 2017 five social workers from and the Prevention Network from Bloomfield Public Schools were honored for their work with children and commitment to our students by Springfield College.

  • Lisa Eells, Principal of Wintonbury Early Childhood Magnet School was recognized by the University of Hartford with the School University Partnership Advisory Board Recognition Award on May 4, 2017.


  • District presented workshops on “The Bloomfield Blueprint” to groups such as NEASC, NABSE, CABE, State Board of Education and CT NAACP.

  • Members of the District Data Team presented the Bloomfield Blueprint at the National Alliance of Black School Educators Conference in November 2016.

  • October 20, 2016 -- Governor Dannel Malloy held a signing ceremony for the Minority Teacher Recruitment Bill at Carmen Arace Middle School.

  • Felicia Hamilton, English teacher at Global Experience Magnet School (GEMS), presented at the National Council for Teachers of English Conference (NCTE) on Exploring Digital Literacy as Advocacy in January 2017.

  • On February 28, 2017 -- district leadership team presented to the State Education Committee on Bloomfield Public Schools’ strategic use of data.
