District

The Bloomfield Public School District provides education for more than 2400 multicultural students ranging from pre-school to high school age.  Learning and Growing Together is more than a slogan in Bloomfield; it is a fact of life.  From early childhood to adult life, the district tries to meet the educational needs of its residents.  The Board of Education employs approximately 260 certified staff and administrators and an additional 210 non-certified staff and food services workers in its facilities.  The range of educational opportunities for students extends form early childhood programs to adult education.

The Wintonbury Early Childhood Magnet School is being established to enable preschool and kindergarten children in Bloomfield, and the surrounding towns, to learn at high levels in a school that employs the most current, research-based practices. The Early Childhood Magnet School population will strive to represent the cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic diversity of the participating districts. The program will integrate special education services, child care and human services for families.

The Vincent, Laurel, and Metacomet Elementary Schools provide K-4 education in the district.  Each school is dedicated to developing the fundamental skills necessary for the students to move on to the next level of education in the district.

The Carmen Arace Campus has been recently divided into two schools, the Carmen Arace Intermediate and Middle Schools providing 5 - 6 and 7 - 8 grade education respectively.  The educational decision to divide the Middle school was based on the desire to provide appropriate educational environments for age groups that are quite different.

The High School Campus consists of Bloomfield High School and the Harris Agri-Science Center.  Each provides education for grade 9 - 12 students.  The High School is a comprehensive learning environment preparing all students for post secondary educational opportunities including a variety of opportunities in vocational fields. The consumer arts program includes automotives, business education, computer technology and graphics arts, culinary arts, and family and consumer science components.  The Harris Agri-Science Center, which is a state and town funded vocational education facility accepting students from Bloomfield and the greater Hartford towns,  directs its students to post-secondary education institutions specializing in natural sciences, animal and plant science, aquaculture, and technology.  Approximately 85 percent of Bloomfield students move on to higher education institutions.

The Big Picture High School, the newest school to the District also provides education for high school age residents and students from surrounding towns.  The school, funded by a grant from the Gates Foundation, is based on a philosophy that students learn through internships (LTI) and schools should address students' needs one student at a time.  A learning plan, which is an individual curriculum, is developed for each student with his/her teacher, parent/guardian, and workplace mentor.  The learning goals include improving empirical and quantitative reasoning, communication skills, social reasoning, and personal qualities.

The Adult Education program provides post high school education for those seeking to expand their skills in specific areas.  The offerings change as needs arise.
