The Bloomfield Board of Education is responsible for providing a free, appropriate public education for all students including those students with disabilities ages three to twenty-one. The Department of Pupil Services, in coordination with each building principal, is responsible for the referral, identification and programming for children with disabilities who require special education instruction and related services. Students receiving services under Section 504 are also the responsibility of the department.
The Bloomfield Public School system is committed to educating students with disabilities in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). This means, to the maximum extent appropriate, students with disabilities are educated with students who are not disabled and in their neighborhood schools, whenever possible.
In order to meet this commitment, we offer a continuum of services including: inclusion, co-teaching, resource/academic support, and specialized programs (Autism, ED, SSVP, SEAC).
The Department of Pupil Services is divided into Special Education and the following support services: Social Work, Guidance, Psychological, Speech and Language, Occupational Therapy and Services for the Hearing Impaired, Health and Assistive Technology. Special Education consists of the following programs: Preschool, Autistic Program, Seriously Emotionally Disturbed, Learning Centers, Resource Support, Co-teaching.
