The mission of the Big Picture High School is to create a learning community dedicated to eduating one student at a time. This is accomplished by designing a personalized learning plan for each student, providing real-world opportunities to connect students to their learning, and expecting them to find authentic, meanignful ways to show what they have learned.
Our innovative philosophy encourages student individuality, flexibility, and creativity while preparing them for life in this rapidly-changing global society.
Compared to the conventional thinking of regular schools, The Big Picture High School seems radical. We allow the curriculum to rise from the student and make it real, out in the real world.
Our students form small groups of only 15-18, with a teacher (called an advisor) who guides the same group all through high school. Students help create their own curriculum, a personal one that reflects and expands their own interests and aspirations. The school day includes student attendance at an off-campus internship generated from each student’s area of study: real life training in real-world work. Big Picture High School students also tackle college courses, and every quarter, exhibit their work to their advisor, peers, parents, mentors, and the community.
