Bloomfield Alternative Academy

The Bloomfield Alternative Academy is in its third year and is starting this school year at a new location:

522 Cottage Grove Road Building F West
Bloomfield, CT 06002
860-286-2666

Relationships with the student’s natural resources:

The academy prides itself on the commitment it has to the “whole” child.  We as a team work with the student’s school team, outside services (i.e. courts), and families. The student knows that we will work for them and with them in order to achieve their goals in life.

Three Components of the Program:

  • Each student must continue with their core academics.  The students are expected to maintain a C or better in order to potentially return to their school.
  • The student must complete a community service project directed by the community service tutor.
  • Finally, the student must successfully complete an in-house program focusing on behavioral skills, academic achievement and planning for the future (college/vocational.)

Ongoing Services:
When students complete their individualized programs they will have the option of returning to their sending school, with on-going support from the team.  Traditionally, the students will return to their school so as to resume their studies.  The teachers, families and especially students know that we will continue to support them for as long as needed.

A new service for some of our older students has been the support of receiving a GED and then following up with admission into higher education.  We have been able to successfully assist students in entering vocational schools, community colleges and local four year schools.  During the 2008-2009 school year, five students received their GED and moved on to either community college or trade school.  Three students are preparing to graduate from trade schools with pending apprenticeships in the summer of 2010.  The team has worked with the higher education institutions and families in order to have a positive transition.  Our team continues to work with the students, parents and higher education staff so as to provide ongoing support
