Donald Harris, chairman of the Bloomfield Board of Education for the past eight years, has been elected president of the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education.

He had previously served as CABE’s First Vice President.

CABE’s mission is to assist local and regional boards of education in providing high quality public education through effective leadership.

Harris is a past chairman of the Connecticut Region Education Council. He is a currently a member of the state Board of Education.

Known as “Mr. Bloomfield” in some circles, Harris has lived in Bloomfield more than 60 years. He graduated from Bloomfield High School and served the town as a public leader in numerous roles, including high school principal, athletic director and deputy mayor.

He has also played a leadership role with several civic and non-profit organizations.

“Education has been a major portion of all my adult life beginning with my 1st teaching assignment at Bloomfield High School in 1967,” Harris said. “I feel blessed to be elected as the President of CABE.”

His term begins immediately. Top priorities for the organization are:

  • Developing a new strategic plan and a board self-evaluation system
  • Enhancing the CABE brand and communicating with all boards of education
  • Inclusion and diversity
