Bloomfield Public Schools’ Director of Athletics Tammy Schondelmayer has been selected the 2021-22 Athletic Director of the Year by The Board 6 Basketball Officials.

She was presented with the Gerald McGrath Commissioner’s Award at a banquet May 5 in Farmington. The recognition is given to an administrator who demonstrates outstanding leadership qualities.

Schondelmayer is retiring this year, after 32 years as an educator in Bloomfield. She served 21 years as athletic director.

“Tammy has distinguished herself as one of the state’s most respected athletic directors,” said Dr. James Thompson Jr, the district’s superintendent of schools. “Her advocacy for concussion protocols at scholastic sports events -- and having high-quality athletic trainers at the ready to treat injuries-- has not gone unnoticed. She has created a culture among our student-athletes in which they love to compete, but also understand the importance of sportsmanship, respect and integrity.”

Under Schondelmayer’s leadership, BHS’ athletics programs have won 66 state championships in eight sports. She has always been most proud of the 26 sportsmanship awards earned by the program.

A New England Hall of Fame softball player, Ms. Schondelmayer was a member of the 1986 national championship softball team at Eastern Connecticut State University.
