Charles Fennell, an 8th grader at Carmen Arace Middle School, is the 2021 Connecticut Spelling Bee champion.

Charles, 13, competed against the state’s top spellers from grades 3 to 8 in a virtual contest last Sunday. He will now represent Connecticut in this year’s virtual Scripps National Spelling Bee. The country’s top -12 spellers will then compete in-person in July in Florida.

Two years ago, as a sixth grader at Carmen Arace Intermediate School, Charles was one of three students representing the state in the national Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
