District Officially Launches New Pre-K Program

The school district officially launched its inaugural program for pre-K students with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the occasion.

The Nest preschool readiness program – for children age three and four - will open at Laurel Elementary School next week. The Aug. 25 ceremony was attended by school and community leaders, staff and families.

“We value the immense importance of developing early literacy skills so that our students develop a love of reading and become life-long learners,’’ said Jennifer Dwyer, Principal of Laurel Elementary School.

The preschool expansion is a result of a collaborative effort between the school district and the Connecticut Office of Early Childhood.

As part of the district’s Portrait of a Graduate initiative, community conversations highlighted the need for early childhood opportunities. Research supports that early literacy experiences are fundamental components of a child’s development. By creating a readiness program in Bloomfield, students will have access to foundational skills that will then prepare them for kindergarten and academic success.

In addition to the new preschool class, Laurel will have two other new programs that will promote literacy, comprehension and family engagement:

  • The planning for a new Literacy Academy will begin this fall, with a focus on student experiences and staff development.

  • In partnership with Laurel’s PTO, The Little Free Library program was recently launched on campus. It provides families with 24-hour access to children’s books donated by the Bloomfield Public Library and the community. The book-drop and container are located outside of the school, near a memorial bench – donated by the Niagara Bottling Company – that honors Judy Johnson, a beloved teacher who passed away last year.

As Dr. James Thompson, Jr., Superintendent of Schools says, “An Early Childhood experience is essential to accelerating the reading and comprehension skills of our children. The district’s goal is to have all children reading at or above grade level by grade three. This promising new initiative will enhance the district’s efforts to increase access to early childhood literacy for Bloomfield families.’’
