For context, the school and district accountability index are built on both growth and proficiency scores. The district wants all students to improve their performance, or scale score, each and every year. Simultaneously, we want all of our students to meet or exceed grade level expectations. Students who are below grade level will need to grow at a faster pace than their peers at grade level. In simplified terms, if all of our students hit their growth targets annually the district will eventually meet its proficiency targets. These two measures work hand in hand toward improving overall academic performance.
In response to the relationship between growth and proficiency, our Teaching, Learning and Leadership (TLL) Department recently celebrated the Bloomfield teachers who exceeded the state average for growth on the Smarter Balance Assessment in grades 4-8. On September 30th, these teachers were invited to the Voices from the Classroom-An Educator’s Roundtable on Growth. In addition to getting to walk the red carpet, enjoy some sweet treats and take home a small token of the district’s appreciation, the teachers were given an opportunity to share specific strategies and perspectives around facilitating their students’ success on the state assessment and beyond. The roundtable conversation did not disappoint as an extensive list of effective teaching strategies and collaborative efforts were outlined by our talented educators.
