Wintonbury Early Childhood Magnet School students enjoyed a special milestone this fall—their very first farm trip to Auerfarm in Bloomfield! The visit was celebrated with a festive “harvest,” marking an exciting opportunity for students to experience farm life firsthand.
The farm lesson focused on food on farms and the process of growing and harvesting. Over the past two years, Wintonbury students have been actively engaged in growing their own food through the CTGrown4CTKids grant, and this spring, Auerfarm brought on an educational farm gardener to support the work in our school’s gardens. Thanks to this collaboration, students were greeted with lush, thriving gardens, allowing them to harvest sunflowers, farm-grown foods, and pumpkins.
Wintonbury’s PTO helped make the pumpkin harvest extra special by organizing volunteers to spread pumpkins across the farm so each child could “pick” one to take home. This event marked the school’s largest harvest yet, providing a hands-on learning experience that combined fun, education, and a connection to nature.
Wintonbury’s first farm trip was a wonderful celebration of growth—both in their gardens and in the students’ learning experiences.
