Day of Service

During the week honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., our schools came together through learning, reflection, and service—embracing the idea that Dr. King’s legacy lives on through action and compassion.

We are proud of our students and staff for continuing to reflect on how we can all contribute to a more inclusive, respectful, and caring community—not just on MLK Day, but every day.

On Monday, January 19, students from Bloomfield Public Schools and the surrounding community came together to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy through meaningful service to others.

Mairi Carchrie-Leigh, a senior at Global Experience Magnet School, was joined by Shannon Kelly, a junior at Bloomfield High School, along with fellow members and leaders of BSA Troop 1149 in Windsor for a dedicated Day of Service. Together, the group spent 3.5 hours sorting and organizing donated items for Mairi’s hygiene pantry, an initiative designed to support individuals and families in need.

This service project marked the final step in Mairi’s Eagle Scout project, which she has worked on diligently over the past several months. The hygiene pantry is scheduled to be installed at Wapping Community Church in South Windsor, where it will provide ongoing access to essential personal care items for the community.

The District is incredibly proud of Mairi, Shannon, and all the Scouts who participated, demonstrating leadership, compassion, and a strong commitment to service. Their efforts reflect the true spirit of the MLK Day of Service—turning words into action and making a positive impact on the greater community.
