Today, February 12, Bloomfield High School (BHS) welcomed Governor Lamont, who visited campus to honor President Abraham Lincoln and highlight the significance of Presidents Day before engaging students in a thoughtful conversation about current events, civic responsibility and leadership. He was greeted warmly by members of the Bloomfield High school student body. Students represented BHS well as the Jazz Band, ROTC, FFA, and Select Choir demonstrated their talent and made the event extra special.
In his opening remarks, the Governor spoke about the origins of Presidents Day, explaining how the holiday began as a celebration of President George Washington’s birthday and later expanded to recognize the contributions of presidents throughout American history. He paid special tribute to President Lincoln, noting his leadership during the Civil War, his commitment to preserving the Union, and his enduring legacy of equality and perseverance.
Drawing connections between Lincoln’s time and today’s political landscape, the Governor encouraged students to reflect on the responsibilities of leadership and the role citizens play in shaping the future of their communities and the nation.
Following his remarks, the Governor participated in a question-and-answer session with students from grades 9-12. The discussion covered a range of topics, including public service, state government priorities, Artificial Intelligence, college affordability, the cost of mental health services, and ICE enforcement in schools. Students asked thoughtful questions and demonstrated a strong interest in understanding how government decisions impact their lives and communities, as well as the types of skills necessary to hold leadership positions.
The event provided students with a unique opportunity to hear directly from a state leader and practice meaningful civic discourse in a real-world setting. Superintendent Dr. Tracy Youngberg shared, “Experiences like this bring classroom learning to life. I am grateful to the Governor for allowing our students to have this incredible opportunity and proud of the way they conducted themselves. Hearing directly from the leader of our state on issues that matter to them depends their understanding and reinforces the skills of critical thinking, respectful dialogue, and active citizenship.”
Bloomfield High School remains committed to creating opportunities for students to engage with leaders, explore diverse perspectives, and develop the skills necessary to become informed and responsible citizens. Principal Jesse White stated, “I am proud of the fact that the Governor was able to see the true genius that each of our students possesses. When our students are afforded the opportunity to share their voice, they are a force to be reckoned with.” The Governor’s visit served as a powerful reminder that civic engagement begins with conversation, curiosity, and a willingness to listen.
Representation from town and Board of Education officials added to the sense of community that is possible in the town of Bloomfield.
