Last night at halftime, Bloomfield High School (BHS) proudly unveiled new signage marking the official renaming of the gymnasium to the Donald F. Harris Jr. Gymnasium — a tribute to a man whose leadership and dedication shaped generations of students in Bloomfield.
A 1962 graduate of Bloomfield High School, Mr. Harris devoted 39 years (1967–2006) to Bloomfield Public Schools. Over the course of his career, he served as a teacher, coach, athletic director, vice principal, and principal, leading with pride, integrity, and an unwavering belief in the power of education and school spirit.
Throughout his nearly four decades in Bloomfield, Mr. Harris was more than an administrator — he was a mentor, a role model, and a champion for students both inside and outside the classroom. His presence at athletic events, school functions, and community activities demonstrated his belief that education extended beyond academics. He understood that gyms, classrooms, and hallways alike were places where character was built and lifelong memories were made.
His impact reached far beyond the school walls, influencing students who would go on to national prominence, including NFL standout Dwight Freeney, WNBA star Nykesha Sales, and Tony Award–winning actress Anika Noni Rose. Known affectionately as “Mr. Bloomfield,” he also served the community in elected leadership roles and contributed to education at the state level.
As the signage was revealed, the community celebrated not only a distinguished career, but a lifetime of service that helped shape the heart of BHS.
