Bloomfield Public Schools to Celebrate Fourth Annual Literacy Week, March 2–6, 2026
Bloomfield Public Schools is proud to announce its fourth annual Literacy Week Celebration, taking place March 2–6, 2026. This districtwide celebration highlights the importance of reading, celebrates diverse voices, and brings students, families, and the community together through engaging literacy-focused activities.
This year, we are especially proud to feature an incredible lineup of spotlight authors and creators—many of whom are award-winning, nationally recognized writers and illustrators—along with talented members of our very own Bloomfield Public Schools community. Our visiting authors include Gabriele Davis, Jeanne Zulick Ferruolo (award-winning author of Ruby in the Sky), Maria Scrivan (award-winning New York Times bestselling author-illustrator), Rick Stromoski (nationally recognized cartoonist and illustrator), and Winsome Bingham (Coretta Scott King Award–winning author). In addition, we are thrilled to highlight the creative talents within our own BPS family, including Principal Jesse White, Assistant Principal Patricia Washington-Geddes, teachers Mary Manson and Reda Othman, and Bloomfield High School Class of 2008 graduate Marcus Johnson. Their contributions exemplify the power of literacy within our own community and serve as an inspiration to our students.
Executive Director of Teaching, Learning and Leadership, Lisa Lamenzo, shared “Literacy Week is more than a celebration of books—it is a celebration of identity, voice, and opportunity. When students see themselves reflected in stories and have the chance to meet authors and creators who bring those stories to life, it reinforces that their experiences and perspectives matter. We are deeply grateful to our community partners, especially the Bloomfield Public Library, for helping us expand these opportunities for our students.”
Highlights of Literacy Week Include:
• Author & Creator Visits Across the District
Students will engage with visiting authors and creators including Gabrielle Davis, Mary Munson, Winsome Bingham, Rick Stromoski, Maria Scrivan, Jeanne Zulick Ferruolo, Patricia Washington-Geddes, Reda Othman, Jesse White, and Marcus Johnson, among others. Author presentations, roundtables, and book signings will take place at multiple schools throughout the week.
• School-Based Literacy Activities
Activities include Read Across America Day in partnership with United Way, Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.), spirit days, poem-in-your-pocket, pajama reading days, book character days, gallery walks, and student-created book projects.
• Cross-School & Community Collaborations
Bloomfield High School students will participate in read-alouds at Metacomet Elementary School, Laurel Literacy Academy, and Duncaster Senior Center. These collaborations strengthen connections across grade levels and extend literacy into the broader community.
• Family & Community Engagement
District Family Engagement events will include a Rick Stromoski cartoon workshop at Prosser Library on March 4th. United Way will also host their Read Across America Day on March 5, bringing volunteers into classrooms. This special day promotes a love of reading and connects students with positive community role models.
In addition to Literacy Week, Bloomfield Public Schools is planning a community-wide Bloomfield Literacy Night on Thursday, June 4, 2026, from 5:30–7:00 PM at the newly renovated Prosser Library. Families and community members are encouraged to save the date. More details will be shared in the coming months.
Thank you to the Literacy Week Committee and our dedicated staff for making this celebration possible. A special thank you to the Bloomfield Public Library for their generous partnership and support in securing our spotlight authors and helping make this week such a meaningful experience for students.
