Read Across America

On Monday, April 6, Metacomet students welcomed a special group of visitors from Bloomfield High School, who came to share their love of reading. As part of the annual Read Across America Week celebration, high school students spent time reading and connecting with younger learners, continuing a meaningful tradition between the two schools.

For the past four years, Bloomfield High School and Metacomet have partnered on this initiative, creating an opportunity for students to build community through literacy. Many of the visiting high school students are former Metacomet students, making the experience even more special. Staff members always enjoy seeing their former pupils return, this time as role models and mentors for the next generation.

The visit was organized by Bloomfield High School staff member, Maria Trabal and Library Media Specialist Kevin Staton, whose efforts helped make the day a success. During their time at Metacomet, the high school students read a variety of inspiring and educational books, including The Power of Her Pen by Lesa Cline-Ransome and John Parra, Shirley Chisholm is a Verb by Veronica Chambers, Separate is Never Equal by Duncan Tonatiuh, A Girl with a Mind for Math by Julia Finley Mosca, and Opening the Road by Keila V. Dawson.

The event not only promoted a love of reading but also strengthened the connection between the two schools. It was a wonderful day of storytelling, learning, and community building that students and staff alike will remember.
