The Donald F. Harris Sr. AgriScience Program has started a composting program using the resources from our cafeteria during student lunches. Students are collecting excess food, trays, liquids, etc. and composting it into nutrient-rich soil. Students will then use the soil to plant various vegetables at the AgriScience Center. This is a great hands on project for our students to learn first hand about wastefulness and how best to recycle our resources.

On April 1st, BHS' Debate Team engaged in a debate focused on: Is AI/ChatGPT helping students learning or making them lazy? The topics was generated by a student in the debate club and voted on by members as the topic to debate. Students debated in front of an audience of their peers as well as a panel of teachers. Debate club teaches essential skills in critical thinking, public speaking, research, and persuasive communication.

This year Bloomfield High School was proud to honor Dorian Pollard-Betsey (Performing Arts) and Brianna Brown (Visual Arts) as our recipients of the CAS Outstanding Arts Award. BHS' AgriScience Center hosted a workshop today in collaboration with A Place Called Hope Educational Program, which focuses on educating others on Birds of Prey. Students got to see first hand three different species including; a hawk, a falcon, and an owl. They got to learn about the three species, their personal story of survival and the many simple ways to lessen conflicts with the wildlife that lives in your very own backyard. This was a great experience for our AgriScience students to explore other aspects of wildlife that they don't encounter daily as an AgriScience student.

Bloomfield High School juniors attended the University of Hartford as part of our ongoing partnership for “Warhawks–Hawks Day,” a hands-on introduction to college life and early career exploration. During the visit, students interacted with college students and faculty, explored campus, and experienced elements of a typical day in the life of a UHart student. The experience provided a stronger, more informed perspective on college as they prepare to enter their senior year this fall. Students shared positive feedback about the experience, with one noting, “It felt like I could really see myself here and understand what college life is like,” while another shared, “Talking to current students made it feel more real and less intimidating.” Many students expressed that the visit helped them better understand expectations after high school, explore potential majors and feel more confident about their future plans. We extend our sincere thanks to Ms. Llonia Jackson and the entire University of Hartford team for their partnership and for creating such a meaningful and engaging opportunity for our students.
