Families stepped into a world of mystery and imagination at Laurel Literacy Academy’s “Read Like a Detective” Family Literacy Night on April 23!

Throughout the evening, students and their families became literary detectives—rotating through interactive stations, solving puzzles, and uncovering hidden clues inspired by favorite book characters and stories. It was a fun, hands-on way to build reading, observation, and comprehension skills together.

Most importantly, it was a night filled with laughter, teamwork, and a shared love of reading. Thank you to everyone who joined us at Laurel Literacy Academy to celebrate literacy, curiosity, and community!

Bloomfield Public Schools: Preparing for State Assessment Season

As we enter state assessment season, Bloomfield Public Schools is proud of the growth our students have demonstrated throughout the year. These assessments are an opportunity for students to show what they know and help us better support every learner.
We know testing can bring a mix of emotions. With the right support, students can approach assessments with confidence and a positive mindset.

What Families Should Know
State assessments measure progress in areas such as reading, writing, science, and mathematics. They are just one part of your child’s overall learning.

How Families Can Support at Home
• Prioritize rest and routine: A good night’s sleep helps students stay focused.
• Encourage a positive mindset: Emphasize effort over perfection.
• Be on time: Arriving at school ready helps students start calmly.
• Plan for breakfast: A nutritious breakfast supports focus—students may eat at home or take advantage of breakfast offered at school.
• Stay connected: Contact your child’s teacher or school for specific testing dates and any questions.

Our Commitment
Our educators are committed to creating supportive environments where students feel prepared and confident. Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting student success!

Metacomet was filled with excitement on April 6 as Bloomfield High School students visited in celebration of Read Across America Week!

For the past four years, this meaningful partnership has brought high school students—many of whom once attended Metacomet—back into our schools to share their love of reading with younger learners. Seeing former students return as positive role models continues to be a special experience for both staff and students.

The district extends its sincere thanks to Bloomfield High School staff member Maria Trabal and Library Media Specialist Kevin Staton for organizing this wonderful visit.

It was a great day filled with inspiring stories, smiles, and a shared love of books!

We have seen some confusion regarding the closing of Carmen Arace Intermediate School (CAIS). CAIS will close at the end of this school year as part of the district’s 2026–2027 reorganization plan.

Beginning next year, Metacomet Elementary will serve grades 3–5, and Carmen Arace Middle School will serve grades 6–8. This shift supports declining enrollment, improves efficiency, and creates more developmentally appropriate learning environments.

For full details, please visit the district website and view the “Superintendent’s Update” in the News section.

GEMS Students Explore STEM at the Connecticut Science Center!

Through our partnership this year with the Connecticut Science Center, we were invited to bring 15 students to attend the STEM Career Showcase. This experience connected students with professionals from a wide range of fields, each offering informal, hands-on activities that highlighted their work and sparked interest in STEM careers right here in Connecticut. While exploring the exhibits, our group was also among the few invited to attend the ribbon cutting of the new Innovation Lab, presented by Boehringer Ingelheim. This lab is dedicated to supporting scientific exploration in genomics, allowing students to engage with concepts such as DNA, coding, and real-world applications through advanced technology. What made this experience even more special is that our students not only witnessed this exclusive moment but were also featured on the news, including Channel 3 Eyewitness News and Fox 61. Congratulations to Jadaliz Acosta, Kaylyn Brown, Aaliyah Neal, and Ayla Green for representing GEMS so well

Warhawk-Hawk Day

Bloomfield High School juniors attended the University of Hartford as part of our ongoing partnership for “Warhawks–Hawks Day,” a hands-on introduction to college life and early career exploration. During the visit, students interacted with college students and faculty, explored campus, and experienced elements of a typical day in the life of a UHart student. The experience provided a stronger, more informed perspective on college as they prepare to enter their senior year this fall.

Students shared positive feedback about the experience, with one noting, “It felt like I could really see myself here and understand what college life is like,” while another shared, “Talking to current students made it feel more real and less intimidating.” Many students expressed that the visit helped them better understand expectations after high school, explore potential majors and feel more confident about their future plans. We extend our sincere thanks to Ms. Llonia Jackson and the entire University of Hartford team for their partnership and for creating such a meaningful and engaging opportunity for our students.

Our readers also included some familiar faces from our own community, including Superintendent Dr. Youngberg, Board of Education Chair Lynette Easmon, Mayor Anthony Harrington, Town Manager Alvin D. Schwapp Jr., Town Councilor Suzette DeBeatham-Brown, and Bloomfield Public Library Director Elizabeth Lane.

Thank you to all our readers, Principal Dwyer, Literacy Coach DeBlasio and staff who helped make today so special.

A special thank you to United Way for coordinating this event and for generously donating classroom copies of our featured book, "See Marcus Grow" by Marcus Bridgewater.
